Masa depan dugong di negara ini semakin terancam sejak penemuannya pada lewat 1960-an.
Percaya atau tidak, kini dianggarkan hanya tinggal kira-kira 100 ekor dugong sahaja di seluruh negara, sekali gus berdepan ancaman kepupusan.
